Ensure road curve safety with
Dynamic Curve Warning VATCS line the border
Unipart Dorman are pleased to be working with the City of Windsor, Ontario on the recent summer installation of a series of Dynamic Curve Warning VATCS featuring on Riverside Drive winding alongside the Detroit river border.
Acting Manager of Transportation for the City Steve Kapusta who had recently visited the UK was impressed by the long term traffic calming results of the large scale 3 year independent Transport Research Laboratory field study on the VATCS technology TRL548 and when Unipart Dorman set up offices in Canada and made the technology available to North America , Steve was determined to ensure the City would benefit.
A number of WA-3 curve and WA-6 winding road VATCS in single and dual directional model types were installed . All signs are solar powered and are strategically located in advance of horizontal curve hazards where historic data has shown a high accident rate due to a combination of excessive speed and poor driver awareness of the approaching hazard.
The TRL548 report provided an impressive 7mph speed reduction to the average driver speed recorded prior to the Installation of the VATCS together with a 1/3 reduction in anticipated accidents at the locations, had the VATCS not been installed.
Importantly this performance data was maintained over a 3 year period and Steve and his team are utilizing the on board wireless VATCS data logging speed analysis feature to evaluate what he and DV expect to be comparable results.
The signs were installed in July and initially set up in covert mode to attain base line data to compare to the historic data for the locations. The signs went fully live at the beginning of August, Initial 3 month short term results are expected to be published by the city towards the end of the year and will feature on this site.
